Opera Rara Les Martyrs Donizetti Elder OAE
Eagerly anticipated, Opera Rara's Donizetti Les Martyrs delivered magnificently, confirming yet again that Opera Rara's reputation for pioneering lesser known treasures in the repertoire. Although Les Martyrs is not unknown (there are several recordings), Opera Rara presented a new critical edition by Dr. Flora Willson of King’s College, Cambridge, which restores the opera’s original French text (Eugene Scribe) and reinstates numerous musical passages that have not been heard since its premiere in 1840. Les Marturs, revealed in all its glory, is a brilliantly dramatic work, combining the delights of Italian bel canto with the exhilarating audacity of French grand style. This performance, conducted byOpera Rara's music director, Sir Mark Elder, was so good that it whetted the appetite for a fully staged production, ideally in a house large enough to give the spectacular treatment it merits. More Rhetoric In The Met’s War Of Words
The 04/28/2014 edition of Deutsche Welle published an article featuring an interview with Metropolitan Opera (Met) General Manager, Peter Gelb. The interview was conducted by Gero Schliess and although not terribly long, it turns up the fire on an already heated labor dispute. Gelb’s key talking points include: The need for permanent cuts isn’t due to executive mismanagement. The failure to meet revenue goals is due to a “cultural and social rejection of opera as an art form.” The Met’s current donors are “suffering” from giving too much for too long. Union employees have overly “generous” benefit programs; in particular, pensions. On this point, it is difficult to miss the fact that Gelb’s go-to examples on these points favor American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA) represented chorus members over the other unionized employees.
