Historical temperaments, Handel's Harpsichord Suites and Vauxhall Gardens: London Early Opera
On Wednesday 8 July 2020, Bridget Cunningham of London Early Opera will be giving a live on-line recital from her own salon at home as part of the Living Room Live series. Cunningham will be performing Bach and Handel, including a taster from her forthcoming album Handel's Eight Great Harpsichord Suites. Cunningham will be playing her double manual Blanchet copy of a Rucker’s harpsichord built by Andrew Wooderson. Playing solo has meant that she has enjoyed experimenting with Neidhardts historical temperaments as usually the harpsichord has to be tuned to match the orchestral instruments. Living Room Live is on Facebook at 6pm on Wednesday. During lockdown, London Early Opera have been focusing on editing music, researching and making new parts and scores for future recordings and concerts whilst members of its chamber ensemble and educational scheme, The Handelians have been sending out individual videos by emails to friends and supporters […]

Marrakech in the cool of the evening
[…] African American jazz pianist and composer Randy Weston cut his solo disc Marrakech In The Cool Of The Evening in the basement of La Mamounia using one of the hotel's several grand pianos. The recording was made in tandem with a disc featuring Gnawa musicians from Marrakech on which Randy Weston joins them in a concluding piano improvisation. Both recordings were made directly onto 2-track digital tape using two dummy heads fitted with Blanchet microphones created by filmmaker Vincent Blanchet for location recording. Solo piano sound is probably the hardest to capture, and the piano tone on Marrakech In The Cool Of The Evening is among the best I have ever heard, and it is great jazz as well. The CD is deleted but copies are definitely worth seeking out*, as lossy audio files cannot do justice to the demonstration quality sound. […]

How Facebook breaks the link between rhythm and algorithm
[…] advice to all music's social media and mixtape addicts:What are musicians but God's instruments? Perhaps this recording will remind us all that we have to get back to listening to the voice of God, that we may quiet the voice of man". * The Splendid Master Musicians of Morocco with Randy Weston was recorded in the basement of La Mamounia Hotel, Marrakech in 1992 directly onto 2-track digital tape using two dummy heads fitted with Blanchet microphones created by filmmaker Vincent Blanchet for location recording. My CD copy reproduces an impressive sense of space and depth, but is marred by congestion in high level vocal passages. This congestion may be an artefact of the unconventional microphone array, or the unusual recording venue, or careless CD mastering, or most probably a combination of all three. Despite this the recording is well worth seeking out for its spontaneity. In an ironic sign […]
