Thursday, August 22nd. 2 p.m.: an interesting programme at the Sala Coronado by the Ballet Contemporáneo del teatro San Martín. 9 p.m.: first of two shows by the Estrellas del Ballet Ópera de París at the Coliseo. Quite a contrast and a demonstration of the richness that this art form contains. For some reason the first half of the season was barren of foreign dance visitors, but in the second half we have an avalanche. The Parisians started the intense period of the season. In my personal history the 1950 visit of the complete Ballet de l´Opéra led by Serge Lifar was the first great experience. Among the basic schools of ballet, […]

Freud meets Wagner
Following my talk at the Freud Museum in May, in which I discussed the impact of Wagner and the great psychoanalyst on the operas that came in their wake, I will be appearing again at the museum in September. My paper, framed within a more specifically Wagnerian context, will form part of a conference looking at Wagner, Freud and the End of Myth. Freud once asserted that his intention was to re-interpret the myths and stories inhabiting the world and thus ‘transform metaphysics into metapsychology’. This conference, featuring Anthony Cantle, Inge Wise, Bryan Magee, Stephen Gee, Estela Welldon and Stephen Gross, ponders whether Wagner had got there before him. By taking the mythic dimension and bringing it into the human realm, Wagner anticipated Freud in his depiction of unconscious processes of the mind, while Freud’s ‘science of the unconscious’ simultaneously gives unprecedented insights into Wagner's monumental achievements.
