He taught a generation of concert masters including William Preucil, Joseph Silverstein, Jaime Laredo, and the young Joshua Bell, who said of him: ‘Gingold was one of the most sincere and beautiful music makers that I’ve ever heard… He loved the violin so much it never left his hand from morning till night.’ Who are the Berlin Philharmonic's past chief conductors? A trumpet widow honours her husband’s orchestra

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests gifts to either the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, or Merit Music Chicago, in support of Merit’s celebrated trumpet ensemble, which Avis supported. Perfect peace.

Leading the enlarged horn section, Daniel Gingrich was especially good in the softer solo passages. It is rumored that principal flute Mathieu Dufour recently won an audition to become principal flute of the Berlin Philharmonic. That would be a great loss for the CSO. In both concerts I heard, he was wonderful. Before intermission Muti and the CSO concluded their Schubert Symphony Cycle with the charming Symphony No. 5. Once again, Muti showed that […]
