[…] Cerha often treats allusively, but he is as much interested in the sound-world, the traditional inflection of the Viennese folk music. The work is part of a modern tradition of Viennese dialect works, the best known exponent of which is HK Gruber, who not only wrote music in the style but developed a reputation as a chansonnier. The original Keintate I was premiered in 1983 by an ensemble that included Cerha, Gruber and friends, including Ernst Kovacic on violin.There is something intensely Viennese about the seriousness with which these contemporary musicians take tradition and rework it. We don't really have anything quite like it in the UK (when Simon Rattle performed HK Gruber's Frankenstein! (1976) in Liverpool (in 1978) it caused a sensation. Exclusive: Two more women join Vienna Philharmonic list
We hear that first violinists, Ekaterina Frolova and Petra Kovačič have both fulfilled their trial periods in the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and are confirmed as full members from today. They become eligible for membership of the Vienna Philharmonic in three years’ time.

How many women in the Vienna Philharmonic?
We have received an up-to the-minute list of female musicians who are permanent members of the Vienna State Opera orchestra, en route to becoming full members of the Vienna Philharmonic. There are now 15, going on 16: Albena Danailova – concertmaster Isabelle Ballot, Olesya Kurylyak, Alina Pinchas, Ekaterina Frolova, Petra Kovacic – 1st violins Patricia Koll , Adela Frasineanu – 2nd violins Ursula Ruppe, Daniela Ivanova – viola Ursula Wex – violoncello Charlotte Balzereit-Zell, Anneleen Lenaerts – harp Karin Bonelli – flute Sophie Dartigalongue – bassoon And from 1 Sep 2017: Silvia Careddu (flute). The old barrier is well and truly broken.

Exclusive: Vienna Philharmonic selects another woman
The times may be a-changing. The first violin tutti audition this morning was won by Petra Kovacic, from Tolmin, Slovenia. All four candidates to make it to the final round were women. Petra is the fifth woman to be admitted the Vienna Philharmonic since the start of this month.
