These are works that were originally secular – madrigals and dramatic recitatives – pieces which, in short, had already become famous in their original contexts before being transformed by swapping in a sacred text as the church harnessed the power of the very music of actors and theatres that it sought to suppress. An arresting example of this comes from the mezzo-soprano Eva Zaïcik, who gives an absolutely gripping performance of Luigi Rossi's Un allato Messagier, a poetic lament on the death of Christ which was formed by an anonymous author who re-texted Rossi's "Lament of the Queen of Sweden on the Death of her Husband" (Un ferito cavalier). Samuel Hasselhorn, First Prize at Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition 2018 – Interview by Emilie Vanderhulst
27-year-old German baritone Samuel Hasselhorn has won the 2018 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels. He studied at the Hanover and Paris conservatories and is currently working with Patricia McCaffrey in New York. He was awarded the 2018 Emmerich Smola Prize, First Prize in the 2017 Das Lied International Song Competition in Heidelberg, Second Prize at the 2015 Wigmore Hall Song Competition in London, and Third Prize in the Hugo Wolf Competition in Stuttgart in 2016. Part of the Les Arts Flo mission is the nurturing of youthful talent : hence Le Jardin de Voix, the academy for young singers, whose soloists gave vivacious performances. Some are very promising and deserve a good future. Their names - Natasha Schnur, Natalie Pérez, Eva Zaïcik, James Way, Josep-Ramon Olivé and Padraic Rowan.This review also appears in Opera Today. Baritone wins the Queen Elisabeth competition
The vocal contest – less prestigious than violin or piano – was won last night by the German baritone Samuel Hasselhorn, 28. Second was the French mezzo Eva Zaïcik, third the Chinese baritone Ao Li.
