The English Concert in Baroque concertos
Dall'Abaco, Porpora, Marcello, Tartini, Telemann; The English Concert, Harry Bicket; Signum Classics Reviewed by Robert Hugill on 5 November 2018 Star rating: 4.0 (★★★★) Stylishly engaging performances of five contrasting baroque concertos with the English concert in celebratory moodThe English Concert is celebrating its 45th birthday and it is perhaps an indication of the way that interest in Baroque music has developed and widened that the ensemble's new disc on Signum Classics is a set of concertos that you may never have heard of, by Dall'Abaco, Porpora, Marcello, Tartini and Telemann. The orchestras for which these works were written were amongt the elite in Europe and concertos such as the ones on this disc were designed not so much for star visitors as to show off the talents of the senior orchestral personnel. And that is the aim of this disc, so we have five principals from the orchestra Nadja Zwiener and […]

The English Concert is celebrating its 45th anniversary
The English Concert is celebrating its 45 anniversary year. Now directed by Harry Bicket, the ensemble was founded in 1973 by harpsichordist Trevor Pinnock and they gave their first concert at the Purcell Rooms. To celebrate the anniversary the ensemble returned to the Southbank, to the re-furbished Queen Elizabeth Hall on 11 October 2018 where forte pianist Kristian Bezuidenhout, the group's new guest director, to perform a programme of CPE Bach, JC Bach and Mozart.Under artistic director Harry Bicket, the group has recorded a celebratory disc of concertos for Signum Classics, showcasing the talents of musicians from within the group, so violinists Nadja Zwiener and Tuomo Suni, violist Alfonso Leal del Ojo, cellist Joseph Crouch, and oboist Katharina Spreckelsen all take step-out roles from the ensemble. The concertos are quite a diverse bunch, by Evaristo Felice Dall'Abaco, Nicola Porpora, Alessandro Marcello, Giuseppe Tartini and Georg Philipp Telemann.Full details of the […]

Thibault Noally (violin), Les Accents (Aparte)From the first shimmering arpeggios across the strings, mirroring the waters of Venice, in Torelli’s previously unrecorded E minor sonata, it is clear that this is something special: a highly characterised, sharply imagined feast of baroque violin playing. Thibault Noally’s command of this improvisational style, whose flights of fancy are far removed from the regularity imposed by Corelli, is complete. Discoveries by Dall’Abaco and Bonporti sit next to more formal sonatas by Albinoni and Vivaldi, and Noally is perfectly matched in two glorious chaconnes by fellow violinist Claire Sottovia. Maybe a harpsichord piece or two would have been welcome for variety, but this is a compelling evocation of a vanished era. Continue reading...

Classical music: The Wisconsin Baroque Ensemble excels again in a varied program of rarely heard Baroque vocal and instrumental music
By Jacob Stockinger Here is a special posting, a review written by frequent guest critic and writer for this blog, John W. Barker. Barker (below) is an emeritus professor of Medieval history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison . He also is a well-known classical music critic who writes for Isthmus and the American Record Guide , and who hosts an early music show once a month on Sunday morning on WORT-FM 89.9. For years, he served on the Board of Advisors for the Madison Early Music Festival and frequently gives pre-concert lectures in Madison. By John W. Barker The Wisconsin Baroque Ensemble offered its latest specimen of intimate Baroque chamber music at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church on Regent Street last Sunday afternoon. As always, each of the performers—six in this case—had one or two opportunities as soloist. Mezzo-soprano Consuelo Sañudo (below), […]
