From rare Donizetti to Rosina Storchio: 50 years of Opera Rara
[…] 25th Donizetti opera with the world première of L’Ange de Nisida, made in collaboration with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden [see my review]. Donizetti wrote over 70 operas, so there is still some way to go before reaching anything like completeness!Other composers documented include Meyerbeer, Opera Rara's recordings of his Italian operas have been a valuable addition to the repertoire, as well as lesser known but no less deserving composers such as Pacini, Mercadante, Paer, Ricci and Mayr, as well as many of Rossini's opera seria, plus more recently Gounod, further Offenbach and Leoncavallo. The company took over the BBC's live recordings of Verdi's lesser known original versions operas better known in revised form, including the 1847 version of Macbeth, the 1857 of Simon Boccanegra, Les Vepres Siciliennes, La forza del destino and the original 1867 French version of Don Carlos complete with ballet music! Arrivederci, Romany!
Shuffle the cards and hitch up the caravans for Morningside! In the same season that Manhattan School of Music revived The Gypsy Baron, Riverside Theater around the corner is the site of Amore Opera’s “Season of Gypsy Operas.” This consists, in typical Amore fashion, of a lively staging of a repertory staple, in this case Carmen, plus a bel canto rarity, the American premiere of Donizetti’s La Zingara. There will be six performances through June 3. La Zingara, a work of 1822, is a semiseria and Donizetti’s seventh opera. The composer, 25 and making his Neapolitan debut, was the star pupil of Giovanni Simone Mayr, the rare German composer […]

A free soul
For the second part of its preview of Caramoor’s upcoming Fidelio, “Trove Thursday” presents Beethoven’s initial 1805 version, now called Leonore, in an Italian Radio broadcast done for the composer’s bicentennial conducted by Erich Leinsdorf and featuring Claire Watson and Ernst Kozub. Like a number of American singers of her generation, New York City-born Watson made her career almost entirely in Europe where she was one of the most important Mozart-Wagner-R. Strauss sopranos of the 50s and 60s. She never sang at the Met and appeared in just one role in San Francisco—in 1966 as Elisabetta in Don Carlo (opposite Marilyn Horne and Jon Vickers)—and a single engagement—as Donna Anna in 1969—at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. However, JJ saw her several times with the New Orleans Opera late in her career. Probably her best known American performance is her radiant Ariadne with Leinsdorf conducting the Boston Symphony in […]
