UK-based arts writer, Tony Cooper, offers a preview of Northern Opera Group’s 8th Annual Leeds Opera Festival which includes a brand-new opera on Sherlock Holmes.

The outstanding bass Edward Hawkins leads a strong cast in the title-role working alongside tenor David Horton as Watson while soprano Ellen Mawhinney is cast in the role of Mary and bass Trevor Eliot Bowes as Jonathan Small. The cast is further strengthened by Katy Thomson (Mrs Hudson), Dominic Mattos (Thaddeus Sholto) and Zahid Siddiqui (Athelney Jones). Complementing the mysteries and intrigue of Mr Holmes’ shenanigans an interactive mystery show will tour West Yorkshire libraries targeted for children from 8 to12 years old. Less can sometimes be more: Verity Lane's 'The Crane' at the Grimeborn Festival

Recapping the Festival: Music
Part VI: Music Continuing our series of festival summaries we bring you a recap of the music from the day. CN Lester provided the first musical performance of the festival with a breath-taking lecture recital centred around the music of Handel, Vivaldi and Strozzi. Lester had the audience on the edge of their seats throughout the recital, which was in the format of an academic talk interspersed with classical singing. Lester provided an insightful and eye-opening examination of the ways in which biblical narratives, messages and characters are queered in the telling through the standard subversions of Baroque oratorio and religious song.
