Last week, 7.6 million Germans watched the final episode of a new television series. It dramatised the darkest chapter in that country's history. While the Brits were gorging on subpar remakes of Hitchcock classics, Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen began a three-part history about the last four years of the Third Reich. The series is called Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter (Our Mothers, Our Fathers), with the implication that the characters you are seeing on the screen in front of you could well have been your parents (or grandparents). According to those who have praised the series, it's an essential, well-crafted televisual expression of a country dealing with its guilt over the past.
