Argerich, Tennstedt 2021
[…] where he was first the Principal Guest conductor and later Music Director. Tennstedt’s physical and emotional health came under pressure in later 1980s. He had two hip replacements and battled throat cancer, cancelled many of his concerts. In 1987 he collapsed during a rehearsal with the London Philharmonic and resigned his post immediately thereafter. He remained the orchestra’s Conductor Laurate and performed with them occasionally till 1994. Tennstedt died on January 11th of 1998 in Kiel, Germany. Here’s the last, sixth, movement of Mahler’s Symphony no. 3, which Mahler had marked Langsam. Ruhevoll. Empfunden (Slowly, tranquil, deeply felt). It is, all these things, as you can hear; Klaus Tennstedt leads the London Philharmonic Orchestra in the 1986 recording.

Rule-breaking music that inspires you and empowers you: Tamsin Waley-Cohen and James Baillieu on CPE Bach's sonatas for violin and keyboard.
[…] felt that the CPE Bach project would work well with James, particularly what Tamsin described as his delicate touch and sense of storytelling. Until approached about the project, James did not know much about CPE Bach but found that the music suited his personality and way of performing. Imitative harmonization of the family name, B-A-C-H, autograph entry by C.P.E. Bach in an album of Carl Friedrich Cramer (June 9, 1774). Courtesy of the Universitätsbibliothek Kiel They recorded the music in two groups of sessions a month a part (there is a total of 153 minutes of music on the discs) and did performances before the recordings which both found really helped, particularly in getting people's reactions to the music. And during the sessions they did a lot of listening, to get the sound they wanted. The recordings were made at Snape Maltings, which both agree is a lovely […]

So who was Jean Louis Nicodé: piano music of beguiling charm from Simon Callaghan on Hyperion
[…] written for the piano. The movements of Ein Liebesleben, largely short, flow effortlessly as do the variations and Callaghan plays them all with some style. The Cd booklet gives some valuable background to the composer and his works, but I failed to discover the composition dates of the various pieces. This disc is a valuable complement to Hyperion's The Romantic Piano Concerto series, and two of Jean Louis Nicodé's teachers appear in the series, Theodor Kullak and Friedrich Kiel. Like some of these concertos, this disc reveals that music of late 19th century Germany was not all Wagner and Brahms, there is a charm and lightness here which beguiles even as you are aware deep down that the music might lack earnest substance.Jean Louis Nicodé (1853-1919) - Andenken an Robert Schumann [32.37]Jean Louis Nicodé - Variationen und Fuge uber ein Originalthema [22.30]Jean Louis Nicodé - Ein Liebesleben [26.21]Simon Callaghan (piano)Recorded Potton Hall, Dunwich, […]
