[…] the New Jersey Symphony in 2020. She didn't marry Robert until 1939, so was still Clara Wieck. The Program Notes also mentions her influence by Liszt and Chopin. Perhaps that just the development of classical music during that time period? Also, Clara Schumann gave the premiere performance of the Robert Schumann concerto.Today's Program Notes also describe most concertos written during that time were considered lightweight vehicles for showmanship. The composers listed - Kalkbrenner, Thalberg, Herz, Pixis, and so on - have indeed slipped to the fringe of the repertoire; I didn't know any of them. The Schumann concerto had its origin in 1841 as a one-movement Phantasie for Piano and Orchestra, performed twice at the Leipzig Gewandhaus with Clara Schumann as the soloist, and Felix Mendelssohn as the conductor.De Profundis was written by Serksnyte as her bachelor's graduation work in 1998. She is now teaching at the same Lithuania Academy […]

[…] In 1945 Alan Hovhaness’ Lousadzek (Coming of Light) for piano and strings was premiered in Boston, which he conducted from the piano. On This Day in Classical Music In 1837 Franz Liszt held a chamber recital in Paris, featuring the Piano Trios of Beethoven with other music on the program. At the last minute, Liszt had the performers reverse the order of the pieces, performing in the first half of the concert a trio by Pixis, and the Beethoven trio on the second half. The audience (and critics), unaware of the switch – and, apparently unfamiliar with this particular Beethoven music, warmly applaud the Pixis, mistakenly thinking it was the Beethoven work, and react coolly to the Beethoven, assuming it was by Pixis. Among the critics, only Hector Berlioz noticed the program switch. Recommended Listening Alessandro Melani’s All’armi, pensieri performed by Alice Baldwin, harpisichord, Jessica Beebe, soprano, and […]

L’Eventail de Jeanne: When Florent Schmitt teamed up with his compatriots to create an “omnibus” ballet.
Throughout classical music history, “omnibus” compositions have been rather rare – and they’ve been often forgotten shortly after their celebrated premieres. The composers of “Hexameron” … led by Liszt. Perhaps the earliest one of these interesting concoctions that has at least remained on the fringes of the repertoire is Hexameron — a morceau de concert put together in the late 1830s under the aegis of Franz Liszt — to which some of the leading composers of the day contributed. Hexameron consists of a theme, variations and finale – with the theme coming from Vincenzo Bellini’s opera The Puritans. The musicians who contributed variations to Hexameron included Frédéric Chopin, Karl Czerny, Henri Herz, Johann Pixis and Sigismund Thalberg, in addition to Liszt. Originally written for piano, Liszt also created a version of Hexameron for piano and orchestra. Having listened to that rendition, my conclusion is that the music […]
