The Wreckers returns: Glyndebourne's vividly dramatic new production of Ethel Smyth's opera
Smyth: The Wreckers - Karis Tucker - Glyndebourne (Photo Richard Hubert Smith) Ethel Smyth: The Wreckers; Karis Tucker, Rodrigo Porras Garrulo, Philip Horst, Lauren Fagan, dir: Melly Still, cond: Robin Ticciati, London Philharmonic Orchestra; GlyndebourneReviewed 21 May 2022 (★★★★★) A wonderfully vivid production of Smyth's rarely performed opera reveals it to be a remarkably taut and powerful drama First, a little background. Ethel Smyth wrote The Wreckers in 1906 and it premiered in Leipzig in German, the year after Strauss' Salome premiered and two years after Puccini's Madam Butterfly. Poul Ruders: The Handmaid's Tale - English National Opera (Photo: Catherine Ashmore) Poul Ruders: The Handmaid's Tale; Kate Lindsey, Emma Bell, Camille Cottin, Robert Hayward, Pumeza Matshikiza, Rhian Lois, Elin Pritchard, Frederick Ballentine, Avery Amereau, director Annilese Miskimmon, conductor Joana Carneiro; English National Opera at London ColiseumFriday 8 April 2022, (★★★★) Poul Ruders' opera The Handmaid's Tale is over 20 years old and is based on a book by Margaret Atwood published in 1986, yet the story it tells is remarkably prescient and, perhaps, even more scarily relevant -today than it seemed in 2000 or 1986. The opera debuted, in Danish translation, at Det Kongelige Teater, Copenhagen in 2000, directed by Phyllida Lloyd. And English National Opera gave the work's premiere in English (the language of Paul Bentley's libretto in Lloyd's production in 2003. It is not quite ENO’s return to the Coliseum after you-know-what, but in many ways it felt like it. (A Philip Glass revival and a new production of Gilbert and Sullivan will have had their devotees, but they are not my potion of forgetfulness.) Anneliese […]
