After leading the orchestra for 15 years, Vasily Petrenko has stepped down and become conductor laureate with Domingo Hindoyan as the new chief conductor whose first season, 2021/22 has just been announced. Hindoyan launches the season with Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 and follows this with an intriguing mixture of waltzes by Strauss (Richard!) and Ravel plus dance-music from Falla and Granados. Throughout the season Hindoyan's concerts mix blockbusters, the unusual and a Latin-American strand inspired by his native Venezuala. He is joined by fellow Venezuelan musicians’ trumpeter Pacho Flores and Venezuelan cuatro (small guitar) player Leónidas Rondón for music including the European premiere of a new concerto for trumpet by Paquito D’Rivera and a work by Flores himself. Alongside Brahms (with local boy, pianist Stephen Hough), Bruckner, Mahler, Schumann, Mozart, Sibelius, […]

Edward Gardner is beginning his stint at principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra with what can only be described as a declaration of intent, Tippett's The Midsummer Marriage, a programme of Lili Boulanger, Lutoslawski's Cello Concerto and Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique, and Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle across three concerts at the Royal Festival Hall this Autumn. The start of an action packed 2021/22 season for the orchestra which also includes Karina Canellakis' first full season as principal guest conductor. Brett Dean continues as the orchestra's composer in residence with a number of UK premieres during a season which features 11 premieres in total with music by James MacMillan, Jimmy Lopez, Danny Elfman, Tan Dun, Missy Mazzoli, Rebecca Saunders, Mason Bates, George Walker and Helmut Lachenmann. Gardner opens the season in September 2021 at the Royal Festival Hall with Tippett's The Midsummer Marriage with Robert Murray and Sophie Bevan as Mark and […]

The music of Russian-born Swedish composer Victoria Borisova-Ollas (b. 1969), which is here given an outing with five short orchestral works, is, in a word, eclectic. Astoundingly eclectic, really. It’s simple music, by and large, or in any case easy to listen to. It’s consonant, wildly tonal (and even when it’s not, it hasn’t got […]

There will also be an exhibition of artefacts from the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn.
