Unustusse vajunud päev - A forgotten day
[…] remind me not so much of the American folk revival as as certain time of a intimate French chanson from the same period and you wonder as the web of influences. The disc begins with a contemporary piece by Ardo Ran Varres (an Estonian actor and composer), from the 2019 Estonian film, The Real Life of Johannes Pääsuke. We then move back in time, and hear a selection of songs by a sequence of Russian poets, Robert Rozhdestvensky (1932-1994), Alexander Morozov & Nikolai Rubtsov (1936-1971), Yevgeny Bachurin (1934-2015), Nikolai Gumilev (1886-1921), Ivan Bunin (1870-1953), Alexander Dolsky (born 1938), Yuliya Silayeva (born 1964) & Nikolai Gumilev. We then end with two songs from films. The first by Soviet Armenian composer Mikael Tariverdiev (1931-1996) and Russian poet Yevgeni Yevtushenko (1933-2017) from the film The Irony of Fate (1975) and by Konstantin Shevelev and Alexander Lugarev from the film film Garbage Man (2001). Rachmaninov: Symphony No.2 (Tadaaki Otaka)
[…] Symphony and is a splendid achievement. The concert also included the Third Piano Concerto with Garrick Ohlsson but unfortunately that doesn't appear to have made it to commercial release. Otaka, as would be expected in 2010, again plays the symphony complete and adopts well-judged tempi throughout. It's an affectionate and vibrant performance, with perfect moulding of the music and transparent textures throughout; provided by excellent playing from the orchestra. For me, it doesn't replace Gennady Rozhdestvensky and Vernon Handley, let alone Andrew Litton in Bergen, as favourite complete recordings, but it does come close. Download from Mega.

Music is the best way to travel
[…] border between jazz and classical. John Mayer's Violin Concerto No. 2 and Jonathan's Sitar Concerto No. 2 were recorded by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted by Calcutta born and Czech Republic domiciled Debashish Chaudhuri. The Violin Concerto was commissioned by Erich Gruenberg in 1977 with funds provided by the Ralph Vaughan Williams Trust, and the Sitar Concerto was premiered in 2019 with Debashish Chaudhuri conducting the Karlov Vary Symphony Orchestra. Sasha Rozhdestvensky is the soloist in the Violin Concerto, and the Sitar Concerto soloist is its composer. Coupled with these works on the beautifully presented CD** from Jonathan Mayer's First Hand Records label are John Mayer's Concerto for the Instruments of an Orchestra, a 1975 London Philharmonic commission premiered with Bernard Haitink conducting, and Jonathan Mayers' Pranam for sitar and orchestra, which was inspired by the Indian dance-form Kathak. Much that I admire the genius of […]
