The Guildhall School of Music and Drama has started doing short courses aimed at both at young people and adults interested in Honing particular musical skills and, of course, the holiday period is ideal to encourage people to do so. For the Easter holidays, there are courses for adults and for children. There is Conducting & Ensemble Direction, where over four days participants will get a thorough grounding in the physical technique of conducting and will conduct a variety of repertoire. For young people there is the Easter Music Course led by tutors from the Junior Guildhall where young instrumentalists playing any bowed string, wind, brass or percussion instruments will gain ensemble experience in a welcoming and supportive environment. More technical perhaps is the Essential Music Theory: Grade 5 which is being given both in children's and adult's versions, again five-day course. Rhythm pitch and tension: composer Graham Fitkin chats about his 1990 album of multi-piano music 'Flak' which has just been digitally remastered
Composer Graham Fitkin pictured on the original album cover his 1990 album, Flak Graham Fitkin's album Flak was originally released in 1990, his debut disc as composer and performer alongside pianists Eleanor Alberga, Errollyn Wallen and Shelagh Sutherland in what have become some of his classic works for multiple pianos. Popular at the time, the album has continued to be played and now Graham has released a new digitally re-mastered version created by Real World Studios' Tim Oliver. Brickyard Broadcast by Lisa BielawaThe North Carolina State University Department of Music, with additional support from the Raleigh Civic Symphony Association and the Concert Singers of Cary, has commissioned acclaimed composer Lisa Bielawa to create Brickyard Broadcast, a spatialized work for hundreds of musicians that will have its world premiere in a Virtual Reality (VR) environment designed by the digital media teams at the NC State University Libraries.The NC State Department of Music will present a live online premiere event and panel discussion on Thursday, November 12 at 6pm ET with composer Lisa Bielawa; Department of Music faculty Dr. Peter Askim, director of orchestral studies; and Dr. Nathan Leaf, director of choral activities for NC State and artistic director of Concert Singers of Cary.
