Louise Farrenc gets more respect in the Gazette than in most newspapers. Less than two years ago, she turned up in these pages as “a 19th-century French composer whose symphonies show a better-than-average sense of how to emulate Beethoven.” Goodness. High praise. Rewind to 2009 and we discover that her orchestral works “are sorely in need of revival.” Move forward to April 30, and we can actually hear Farrenc’s Symphony No. 1 in C Minor as in Salle Claude Champagne as given by a student orchestra under the baton of Nadège Foofat. The doctoral candidate at the Université de Montréal feels certain that this is the Canadian première. The German publisher Florian Noetzel assured her as much. The U de M library had to buy the score, no bargain at about $500.
