An exciting rediscovery: Mercadante's Il proscritto proves far more than a museum piece in this thrilling revival from Opera Rara
Mercadante: Il proscritto - Iván Ayón-Rivas & Ramón Vargas - Opera Rara at the Barbican (Photo Russell Duncan)Mercadante: Il Proscritto; Irene Roberts, Ramón Vargas, Iván Ayón-Rivas, Elizabeth DeShong, Sally Matthews, Goderdzi Janelidze, Opera Rara Chorus, Britten Sinfonia, Carlo Rizzi; Opera Rara at the BarbicanReviewed 28 June 2022 (★★★★★)Mercadante's opera revived after a gap of 180 years proved thrilling and remarkably innovative, with gripping drama from all performers. Mercadante is the nearly man of Italian opera, with a successful career lasting from 1819 to the 1860s yet never quite achieving the level of prominence, or historical endurance, of his contemporaries. Opera Rara has already espoused three of his operas over the years and last night (28 June 2022) the company presented Mercadante's Il proscritto at the Barbican Hall, following recording sessions. Carlo Rizzi conducted the Britten Sinfonia and Opera Rara Chorus, with Irene Roberts, Ramón Vargas, Iván Ayón-Rivas, Elizabeth DeShong, Sally Matthews, and Goderdzi Janelidze.Il […]

Anglais - Samson et Dalila is a Production of Two Halves at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden
[…] be brought out to a degree that is appropriate for the occasion. This dance comes across as just a little too comical and thus cheapens the whole experience. Even the very ending seems a tad too humorous to make us feel the gravitas to the extent that we should. Nevertheless, no one can deny that the evening’s musical credentials are uniformly strong, with Łukasz Goliński as the High Priest, Blaise Malaba as Abimélech and Goderdzi Janelidze as the Old Hebrew (who here becomes Samson’s Rabbi) all playing their parts to the full. Musical treats: Richard Jones' production of Saint-Saens' Samson et Dalila fails to convince, but there is much to listen to
[…] a stage animal as Garanča but the two's scenes together did crackle and if he did not quite overwhelm at the very end, part of the problem was down to the production as there was just too much else going on. Łukasz Goliński snarled, growled and pawed the ground wonderfully as the High Priest. He seemed to be in charge of the Philistine forces and was a fearsome figure, sung with assurance by Goliński. Goderdzi Janelidze as Samson's Rabbi (the Old Hebrew) had a wonderfully dark black voice that I would love to hear in a bigger role. Here he lent strength and power to the music, and had a far larger dramatic role than Saint-Saens and his librettists envisaged, his spirit in Act Three almost standing in for Samson's vision of Jehovah. The smaller roles were all strongly taken by members of the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme and […]

Anglais - La Bohème moves to the Banlieue
[…] repertoire. She found dramatic accents and beautiful moments in the third act and did a rather worthy death but she didn't take advantage of her great moments in the first act. Roberto de Candia was good as Marcello but didn't excel. Valentina Naforniţa was good vocally as Musetta and scenically spectacular in the disinhibited character – perhaps that's why the public applauded her so much. Toni Marsol did very well as Schaunard and Goderdzi Janelidze was disappointing as Colline, since she didn’t make the most of the opportunity to standout in the famous “Vecchia zimarra”. The choir was very satisfactory, and the orchestra was sufficient and well conducted by maestro Giampaolo Bisanti, who obtained acceptable global results with voices that were below expectations. Xavier Pujol (Gran Teatre del Liceu. Barcelona, 14th June 2021) La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini. Atalla Ayan, tenor. Anita Hartig, soprano. Roberto de Candia, […]
