New music for non-traditional inclusive ensembles: RNS Moves & National Open Youth Orchestra in dynamic new pieces
[…] Adoo and the robo-recorder, invented and played by Liza Bec. Werner worked closely with them to integrate the distinctive instruments into the music. Werner's new piece is inspired by city life, evoking the sensation of strolling through a bustling landscape and being drawn to buskers using a mixture of field recordings and solo parts played live by the players. […] ideas of the Camerata were based on the members’ understanding of the music of Classical Greece, which most likely was wrong: they believed that Greek plays were sung, not spoken. That didn’t matter much as these ideas led to the creation of the recitative and the aria, and soon after, the cantata and, importantly, opera. The most active members of the Camerata were composers Giulio Caccini, Vincenzo Galilei, the father of Galileo Galilei, and Pietro Strozzi, but the society included many Florentine intellectuals and composers. Jacopo Peri was one of the first to put these ideas into practice, creating Dafne and Euridice, the first two operas in history. The librettos to the operas were written by another member of the Camerata, the poet Ottavia Rinuccini. Spitalfields Music's 2022 festival (30 June to 13 July 2022), curated by chief executive Sarah Gee, celebrates the power of music to transcend culture, communities, languages and borders at a time when global unity is urgently needed, with performances combining different styles, artforms and genres to demonstrate the extensive range and resilience of classical music. Co-curated with conductor Cayenna Ponchione-Bailey and Afghan pianist and composer Arson Fahim, Spitalfields Music has commissioned Afghan musicians in exile or hiding to write new compositions and create arrangements of Afghan traditional songs which will be performed by a chamber orchestra of instruments from Afghanistan and the Western classical music tradition.
