The featured young soloist today is Tabitha Mo, a flute student of Hideko Amano. Tabitha plays music by Nielsen, Mozart, Still, and Sarasate in WFMT’s Fay and Daniel Levin Performance Studio, joined by pianist Inah Chiu. Tabitha Mo, age 16, is a sophomore at William Fremd High School in Palatine and studies flute with Hideko Amano. Most recently, she won first prize in the 2022 Chicago International Music Competition Young Artist Division, and also received first prize from the 2022 Society of American Musicians Intermediate Division. Tabitha has received numerous awards in the past which include third prize in the senior division of the Chicago Flute Club Competition in 2021 and second prize in the Elementary division, and Honorable Mention from the DePaul Concerto Festival. She was also awarded winner of Other Instruments Category of the Walgreens National Concerto Competition Orchestral Division in 2019. Tabitha plays in the Midwest Young Artists Conservatory Symphony Orchestra. This past summer she participated at the Illinois Summer Youth Music Flute Camp in Champaign, studying with Professor Jonathan Keeble. Tabitha receives coachings and has played in masterclasses of Alyce Johnson, Anthony Trionfo, and Dr. Jonathan Keeble. English is Tabitha’s favorite subject in school because she enjoys writing, and in her spare time, Tabitha enjoys drawing. The post Tabitha Mo, 16, flute appeared first on WFMT.
This weekend, the featured young soloist is Shivshankar Prasad, a pianist who first appeared on Introductions in April 2022 as a finalist in the 2022 Crain-Maling Foundation CSO Young Artists Competition. His live recital in WFMT’s Fay and Daniel Levin Performance Studio features music of Sergei Rachmaninoff, Ludwig van Beethoven, Felix Mendelssohn, and Richard Danielpour. Shivshankar Prasad made his professional debut in 2021 as a soloist with the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Stephen Alltop. He also appeared as a soloist with the Oistrakh Symphony of Chicago, and he performed at Symphony Center with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago in March 2022. As first prize winners in the 2022 American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition, Shivshankar and his sister Sreedevi will perform at Carnegie Hall in June 2023. The recipient of numerous recognitions at competitions throughout the region, Shivshankar holds top prizes from the Crain-Maling Foundation CSO Young Artists Competition, DePaul Concerto Festival, the Stanger Young Artists Concerto Competition, the Sejong Music Competition, the Illinois State Music Teachers Association Competition, the Roberta Savler Piano Contest, the Illinois Music Association Competition, and the Society of American Musicians Competition. A student of Dr. Soyoung Kee, Shivshankar is a senior at James B. Conant High School in Hoffman Estates. Shivshankar regularly performs with Magic of Music, a student-led volunteer organization that performs for residents of assisted living facilities. When he is not at the piano, Shivshankar enjoys learning Carnatic (Indian classical) violin and spending time with his friends and family. Today’s guest deejay is Pierre Laplace. I invited Pierre to share a mix on Soundwave after hearing his 2019 album, You Disappeared. Since then, Pierre has released a new album, Sundown. Where You Disappeared felt like the soundtrack to a China Miéville novel, Sundown felt like a Koyaanisqatsisque soundtrack for a doomed planet. The album notes for Sundown tell a tale of desperate conflict in Rome in the year 2062. That works, too. The album drips with foreboding. The first mix Pierre shared was an unexpected delight. Then I could hear the influences of someone like, say, Ennio Morricone, in his music, Pierre’s mix didn’t convey the feeling of his own music. Pierre’s mix for today’s show is further from his albums. His mix is more unexpected and just as delightful. Aside from three artists, I’m unfamiliar with the musicians who appear in Pierre’s mix. I’ve gone down the listening rabbit hole on Spotify because all the music in his mix is brilliant. I’m sure you’ll be doing the same. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be KMRU. See you then. Alexi Murdoch “All My Days” Mark Kozelek “Find Me, Ruben Olivares” Alela Diane “About Farewell” Hayden “1939” Townes Van Zandt “Kathleen” Spain “Easy Lover” Adrian Crowley “Some Blue Morning” Grandaddy “He’s Simple, He’s Dumb, He’s the Pilot” Elysian Fields “Next Year in Jerusalem” Jackson C. Frank “Marcy’s Song” Bill Fay “Big Painter” Antony and the Johnsons “Hope There’s Someone” Richard Hawley “Cole’s Corner” Nina Simone “Black Is The Color Of My True Love’s Hair” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/soundwavemix/message
