Opera critic is fired after sex-pest claims
A little-known German opera critic is the subject of an extensive investigation by the American tenor Zach Finkelstein, who styles himself Middleclass Artist. His headline says it all: ‘Critic Andreas Laska “Relentlessly” Harasses Dozens of Young Women Singers for Unpublished “Article”‘. We hear that three board directors of Atelier Musicale – Markus Laska, Serena Marchi and Silvia Paolucci – have left the company to open a new agency, called Melos Opera. Their artists include the Dallas music director Emmanuel Vuillaume, the tenor Ramon Vargas (pictured) and the bass Giovanni Furlanetto. Atelier Musicale, under president Virginio Fedeli, is not presently contactable. Its website is ‘under construction’.

Dancing and Leaping
May is the month for lovers; a month ‘when merry lads are playing’, as Orazio Vecchi’s text for Thomas Morley’s madrigal puts it. Since time immemorial, May has held a certain fascination for the poetic and pagan mind, completed by the crowning of the May Queen (perhaps a parallel with the coronation of Mary within the Christian church). But it has more distant roots in the ancient world. Always associated with new beginnings, May was dedicated to Artemis, the goddess of fecundity in the Greek world, while in Roman culture May was devoted to Flora, the goddess of flowers. In the Ancient University of Oxford, the Choir of Magdalen College climbs the tower and greets the rising sun on the first day of the month (as depicted here by William Holman Hunt).
