(Orchestra, Seat N117. $15.45)The quartet at the conclusion of the concert.ProgramFranz Schubert (1797-1828), Quartet in C Minor, D. 730 "Quartettsatz" (1820).Mieczyslaw Weinberg (1919-1996), Quartet No. 16 in A-flat Major, Op. 130 (1981).Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847), Quartet No. 6 in F Minor, Op. 80 (1847).Artists: Marc Danel, violin; Gilles Millet, violin; Vlad Bogdanas, viola; Yovan Markovitch, cello.The quartet is named after it's leader, Marc Danel, and has been around for over 30 years. It's has worldwide presence; for example, in the month of October they have concerts in several cities in the US and in Leuven, Belgium. Naturally this was my first encounter with the ensemble.The Schubert piece was relatively short (less than 10 minutes) and contains two movements: Allegro assai, and Andante.Weinberg was a Polish-born Russian composer and pianist, per Wikipedia, which also lists the 159 compositions authored by the composer. Forgotten Voices at Purbeck International Chamber Music Festival
Cellist Natalie Clein's Purbeck International Chamber Music Festival returns performances in historic locations in Dorset and the Isle of Purbeck from 7 to 10 September 2023. This year's festival features Natalie Clein, cello, Kate Royal, soprano, Danel Quartet, Nurit Stark, violin, Marianna Shirinyan, piano, Vivi Lachs, singer & author, Katharina Ziemke, painter in festival that has a strong folk influence, exploring different strands within classical and folk musics, under the title of Forgotten Voices.The festival opens with a concert which pairs quartets by Schubert and Weinberg from the Danel Quartet with duos for violin and cello by Gliere and Kurtag from Natalie Clein and Nurit Stark, and this is followed by a programme of music by women composers including songs by Madeleine Dring from soprano Kate Royal, Henriette Bosman's cello sonata with Natalie Clein, and music by Clara Schumann and Amy Beach. Wigmore Hall 2020/21
John Gilhooly at Wigmore Hall (Photo Kaupo Kikkas) Wigmore Hall's 2020/21 season, which was recently announced by the hall's director John Gilhooly, will be opened on 10 September 2020 by baritone Christian Gerhaher. The season includes nearly 500 concerts and over 500 Learning events. Series exploration includes the complete Mendelssohn string quartets from the Elias String Quartet, with the Cardinall's Musick performing his sacred choral music and a song recital series devoted to songs by Mendelssohn and Liszt. The Pavel Haas Quartet will be performing all Martinu's quartets alongside music by other Czech composers, the first time the cycle of Martinu's quartets has been presented in London in a single series.
