Chopin 2019
February 25, 2019. Chopin. Frédéric Chopin was born on March 1st of 1810. Here’s a brief sketch of Chopin’s first 20 years. He was born in Żelazowa Wola, not far from Warsaw, in what then was the short-lived Duchy of Warsaw, created by Napoleon three years earlier (the Duchy would disappear five years later, following Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo, with that part of Poland reverting back to Russia). His father, Nicolas Chopin, was French, his mother, Tekla Justyna Krzyżanowska, – Polish. The first 20 years Frédéric lived in Poland, mostly in Warsaw, where his family moved when Nicolas received an appointment at the newly-established Warsaw Lyceum. Frédéric was a child prodigy (“Second Mozart,” the local press called him), both as a pianist and as a composer: a lithograph of a polonaise he wrote at the age of eight, survives to this day. Dearest readers, it has been a couple of weeks since my last post, but my Masters degree has had to take priority. Not long until I can blog much more regularly! Today’s blog is based on a wonderful Nocturne by Polish composer, Frédérich Chopin. This piece was chosen by my very good friend, Dominik, as it was recently his birthday, so I hope you enjoy this blog! Frédérich Chopin (initially born Fryderyk) was born 1st March 1810 in Zelazowa Wola (west of Warsaw), Poland. Chopin’s father, Nicolas was a Frenchamn who emigrated to Poland in 1787 and in 1806 married Justyna Krzyzanowska. In 1810, only six months after Chopin was born, the family moved to Warsaw where Nicolas gained a job teaching French at the Warsaw Lyceum. This meant the family were housed in the Saxon Palace, and it was here that Chopin began receiving informal music lessons. Both his […]

[…] Weydlich was the supervisor. Most likely he worked in the accounting department and as Weydlich’s personal assistant and probably tutored Weydlich’s children. When the factory closed down 1792, Nicolas had to reconsider his options. While returning to France was a possibility, he chose to stay in Poland. He spent some time with the militia and eventually found himself employed as a tutor with the Laczynski family. Through these connections he met and eventually married Justyna Krzyżanowska – twenty years after coming to Poland. In 1810, a few months after the birth of Federic, the Chopin family moved to Warsaw to live in the Saxon Palace where Nicolas taught at the Warsaw Lyceum. Nicolas and Justyna were both musical. Nicolas played the violin and flute and Justyna played and taught the piano. Both Frédéric and his sister, Ludwika, learned to play the piano and did sometimes play duets together. Next […]
