Mozart - La clemenza di Tito, K621 - Nezet-Seguin - Villlazón - DiDonato
[…] for those with an interest in something quite different, Alessandro De Marchi (CPO) (2017). It is based on a production in Vienna in 1804, where all the arias for Tito have been replaced by then newly written arias by Joseph Weigl and Johann Simon Mayr. I wonder what Mozart would have liked the idea, and I really wonder how his widow Constanze reacted. By then she had already met the Danish diplomat Georg Nikolaus von Nissen, whom she eventually married and moved to Copenhagen, but in 1804 she was still in Vienna, I believe. If you are a newcomer to La clemenza di Tito, you can with confidence buy Nézet-Séguin’s set. If you are a jaded collector and own Davis, Mackerras, maybe also Kertesz and Karl Böhm, you should at least give this new set a listen and enjoy the singing of a quartet of female singers that are the equals […]

Bertold Goldschmidt - Beatrice Cenci, DVD Bregenz
[…] an air of unsettled alarm. She's Count Francesco's second wife, not Beatrice's mother, but she knows he's a tyrant, and that wrong. Beatrice (sung by Gal James) atths stage has softer, less assertive tones. Bernardo (Cristina Bock), Beatrice's full broither is also cowed, burying his head on Beatrce's lap. "Ours us an evil lot, and yet" sings Beatrice "let us make the most of it". The cry of abused children, everywhere. Enter Cardinal Camillo, (Per Bach Nissen) whose lines swagger, rolling figures built into the part, coiling like a snake. He's covered up a murder for Cenci (sung by Christoph Pohl), both complicit in evil. Pohl's baritone smoulders, yet has a lethal edge : the character's nasty business. beatrice places her hopes in Orsino (Michael Laurenz) a young priest - forbidden terriotiry ! He's in love with her, so offers to help her. At the Villa Cenci, princes asnd cardinals are […]

Mozart 2018
[…] the role of the Queen of Night in The Magic Flute. Mozart promptly fell in love with Aloysia, but had to leave Mannheim after a short stay as his father Leopold wanted him to go to Paris. Several months later Mozart met Aloysia again, this time in Munich, where she was singing at the Court Theater. Unfortunately, by then Aloysia’s feeling had changed, she even pretended not to recognize Mozart. According to Georg Nikolaus von Nissen, Mozart’s biographer and the husband of Mozart’s widow, Constanze, Mozart’s reaction was swift: he sat at the piano and sung, “The one who doesn’t want me could kiss my ass” (Mozart wasn’t shy of using scatological terms). While living with the Webers in Vienna, Mozart fell in love with Constanze, the third daughter. They married on August 4th of 1782 (papa Leopold consented to the marriage only grudgingly). In the following years, till his […]
