For those of us who would be quite happy to never hear Jingle Bells again, and who reach for our earbuds to shut out canned supermarket carols, the Christmas music of the Baroque masters comes as something of a relief. For composers such as Bach, Vivaldi and Telemann, Christmas music was simply a part — albeit an important one — of the continuum of the feast days of the Christian cycle. Not for them boxing off Christmas for one period in the year, and forgetting the musical esthetics of the other 11 months. On Sunday afternoon, the Alberta Baroque Ensemble gave a sold-out audience at Robertson-Wesley United Church just such an antidote to jaded December musical sensibilities. British choreographer Akram Khan, who devised Olympic 7/7 tribute, will present interpretation of Igor Stravinsky's workOne hundred years to the day after Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring caused a near riot in Paris, the British choreographer Akram Khan will present his interpretation of what was a seminal moment for the arts, Sadler's Wells has announced.Khan, fresh from the Olympic opening ceremony where he devised the piece paying tribute to the victims of the 7 July bombings, has been commissioned to create a new full-length work to mark the centenary of Stravinsky's work that was first performed by Sergei Diaghilev's Ballet Russes with choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky.Khan stressed it would be his own interpretation, using his own music and choreography.
