Here's most of the press release announcing the program for the June 16, 2023 Centennial Concert. Looks nice! At past gala concerts, there have occasionally been surprise guests. It's quite a line-up!Conductors: Music Director Eun Sun Kim, former Music Director Sir Donald Runnicles, former Principal Guest Conductor Patrick SummersSoloists include:Sopranos: Karita Mattila, Ailyn Pérez, Patricia Racette, Nina Stemme, Heidi Stober, Adela ZahariaMezzo-sopranos: Susan Graham, Daniela MackTenors: Lawrence Brownlee, Michael Fabiano, Brandon Jovanovich, Russell ThomasBaritones: Lucas Meachem, Brian MulliganBass-Baritone: Christian Van HornThe wording "soloists include" means that there might be additions, which would be lovely. Not much in the way of basses there! And a raft of singers will be in town for the summer season who aren't listed there. Some singers who've been important to the company in the past aren't listed. I remember some unexpected […]

The photo above (click to enlarge) is representative of the deeply beautiful, just slightly abstract, staging. The lighting contributes to the effect, and I will say that the singers held three of these tableaux (annunciation, nativity, crucifixion) very briefly, for maybe ten seconds. The last […]

War Memorial Opera House Photo by Lisa Hirsch It's finally here: the San Francisco Opera centennial season announcement. It's kind of a wow! And that's even though it's a shorter than I would like; I'm somewhat surprised that with all of the hoopla and fundraising attendant on such an occasion, the company couldn't get donors to pony up enough money for 10 operas. To my surprise, the announcement includes part of the 2023-24 season, and that looks like it'll be a good one as well, because it's got three new operas on it. Here are the answers to the quiz that Matthew Shilvock set up, with as much detail as I can reasonably fit in a bullet list: Two new operas by Bay Area composers John Adams, Antony and Cleopatra, libretto put together by the composer largely from the Shakespeare play, but with additional texts […]
