The gay African American composer's music was repeatedly dismissed during its day, but his minimalist music is now being unearthed to critical acclaim. Julius Eastman (October 27,1940-May 28, 1990) was also a pianist, vocalist, and dancer. Eastman died homeless at the age of 49 in Millard Fillmore Hospital in Buffalo, New York of cardiac arrest.
