Elgar: Symphony No.3 (Tadaaki Otaka & Vernon Handley) and Symphony No.1 (Otaka)
Edward Elgar:01.- 04. (elaborated by Anthony Payne) Symphony No.3 [57'37]05. (orch Anthony Payne) Pomp and Circumstance March No.6 [8'41] Sapporo Symphony Orchestra conducted by Tadaaki Otaka Signum SIGCD118 [recorded March 2007; CD issued 2008] [digital-download; flacs. booklet, cover and inlay scans] Recorded at Sapporo Concert Hall "Kitara", JapanRecording engineer: Mike Hatch; Producer: Alexander van Ingen Here the Japanese conductor Tadaaki Otaka reinforces his position as a fine Elgar interpreter following his outstanding recording of the First Symphony made for BIS 12 years earlier - see below. He was awarded the Elgar Medal of the British Elgar Society in 2000, a CBE in 2010 and is a British citizen. Otaka offers a spacious view of Anthony Payne's excellent realisation of Elgar's sketches for a Third Symphony. Otaka has been quoted as finding Elgar as "like Bruckner" and this is certainly the case here. But this doesn't make his tempi seem slow and […]

Rachmaninov: Symphony No.2 (Tadaaki Otaka)
Sergei Rachmaninov:01. - 04. Symphony No. 2 in E minor, op.27 [61'49]Melbourne Symphony Orchestra conducted by Tadaaki OtakaABC Classics 4764842 [recorded July 2010; digital download released 2012][digital download; flacs, cover and inlay scans - no booklet]Recording venue: Town Hall, MelbourneRecording engineer: Russell Thomson; Producer: Haig Burnell To supplement Tadaaki Otaka's studio recording of Rachmaninov's Second Symphony with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, already here on MIMIC, here is a later recording made in concert with the Melbourne Symphony and is a splendid achievement. The concert also included the Third Piano Concerto with Garrick Ohlsson but unfortunately that doesn't appear to have made it to commercial release. Otaka, as would be expected in 2010, again plays the symphony complete and adopts well-judged tempi throughout. It's an affectionate and vibrant performance, with perfect moulding of the music and transparent textures throughout; provided by excellent playing from the orchestra. For me, it doesn't […]

Brahms: Piano Concertos No.1 & No.2 - Garrick Ohlsson & Tadaaki Otaka
Johannes Brahms:01. - 03. Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, op.15 [51'23]04. - 07. Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major, op.83 [51'11] Garrick Ohlsson- piano, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra conducted by Tadaaki Otaka ABC Classics 4810409 [recorded November 2012; digital download released July 2014] [digital download; flacs, cover and inlay scans, no booklet] Recording venue: Arts Centre, Melbourne, AustraliaRecording engineer: Alex Stinson; Producer: Duncan Yardley Here's an intersting mix of American pianist, Japanese conductor and Australian orchestra. Recorded in concert in Melbourne's main arts complex, the audience is surprisingly quiet during the performance and there's little evidence of any patching. However, they do break out into enthusiastic applause at the end of each work. Garrick Ohlsson follows the modern trend of taking his time playing these concertos. If this troubles you, you are unlikely to be swayed away from the early stereo classic Leon Fleischer with the Cleveland Orchestra under […]
