The American composer Ron Nelson, who wrote numerous works for wind ensemble, as well as for orchestra and chorus, passed away on December 24, 2023. He was 94. Leonard Slatkin once called Nelson a “quintessential American composer,” and praised his “ability to move between conservative and newer styles with ease,” adding, “The fact that he’s a little hard to categorize is what makes him interesting.” Born in Joliet, Illinois, Nelson studied with Louis Mennini, Bernard Rogers, and Howard Hanson at […] The post appeared first on Serenade.

Drinking the stars: Mary Dullea plays the piano music of John McLachlan
John McLachlan: Drinking the stars; Mary Dullea; Farpoint RecordingsUncompromising perhaps, occasionally stark but always vivid and arresting, a survey of the Irish composer John McLachlan's piano music from the last 30 years in stunning performances from Mary DulleaThe Irish composer John McLachlan was born in Dublin and studied music at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, and Trinity College Dublin, and studied composition with William York, Robert Hanson and Kevin Volans. Whilst the majority of pieces are from the last […]

Although I might be overstating the case, it seems to me that the majority of classical music fans in America do not really think of Gershwin when they think of American classical music composers – they are more likely to think of Copland, Barber, Ives, Hanson, or perhaps even John Adams. But maybe I’m wrong, and they remember Rhapsody in Blue, the Concerto in F, or some of the Gershwin works included on this recording. Slatkin obviously enjoys this music and delights in bringing out the joy that Gershwin always seemed to be able to infuse into his scores. You hear it especially so in the hustle and bustle of An American in Paris as well as in the vigorous Latin rhythms of the Cuban […]
