[…] Readers know that I dislike the prevailing trend of changing time and place in opera staging, so I was happy that two longstanding members of Roberto Oswald´s team were in charge. It was the first time that Aníbal Lápiz did not only the costumes but also the stage direction, and he was seconded by Oswald´s collaborator in stage design, Christian Prego. Oswald was a consumate master of lighting design, but Rubén Conde has been chief of lighting technique at the Colón since 1988. So this is a thoroughly professional team, and it showed: we felt in Louis XV´s time and the action was as coherent as the libretto´s flaws permit. Although Prego´s layout was […]

[…] in a long time. In other words, one that could be seen in the mentioned houses, where they have that privilege very often. So it is one step (just one!) in the uphill recuperation of the Colón´s prestige. The other main reason is the homage to Roberto Oswald: his longtime collaborators, Aníbal Lápiz and Christian Prego, have presented with great care the production that had been seen in 1992, 1993, 1998 and 2003, with some changes along the way. For in these sad days to see a production that respects the libretto is a rare pleasure after so many disasters. The costumes designed by Lápiz are admirable and fully in accord with the Rome of the early Nineteenth Century. And the Te Deum that closes […]

Contrasts at the Goethe for BEMF
Ignacio Prego (file photo) Despite 11:00 a.m. hour, the Goethe Institut-Boston was packed on Thursday for a Boston Early Music Festival Fringe concert that might have looked monochromatic on paper, consisting as it did entirely of works for harpsichord by Bach. Not only that, but there were two suites in the same key, the English Suite (BWV 808) in G Minor and the French Suite (BWV 816) in G Major; and the harpsichords were made by the same craftsman, Owen Daly, after instruments by Zell and Mietke. However, the concert was in fact a case study in contrasts: two performers (Ignacio Prego and Byron Schenkman) offered very different approaches on two instruments with divergent personalities. The difference in the instruments was unmistakable as soon as you entered the room: On the left was a big, double-manual Zell harpsichord decorated with orientalist images of pagodas and birds. On the right stood […]
