Recent Releases No. 62 (CD Reviews)
by Karl Nehring Something that these three releases all have in common is they all boast audiophile-quality sound. Two of them, in fact, are from label with audiophile credentials: Reference Recordings and Sono Luminus. The third is from Hyperion, a small label from the UK that although not necessarily known as an audiophile label, has produced some superbly engineered recordings. To be honest, recording technology and practices have come a long way over the past 50 years. Many labels almost routinely release recordings that would have been considered “audiophile-quality” back in the 1970s when the underground audio magazines started touting such things. Mercadante: Il proscritto - Iván Ayón-Rivas & Ramón Vargas - Opera Rara at the Barbican (Photo Russell Duncan)Mercadante: Il Proscritto; Irene Roberts, Ramón Vargas, Iván Ayón-Rivas, Elizabeth DeShong, Sally Matthews, Goderdzi Janelidze, Opera Rara Chorus, Britten Sinfonia, Carlo Rizzi; Opera Rara at the BarbicanReviewed 28 June 2022 (★★★★★)Mercadante's opera revived after a gap of 180 years proved thrilling and remarkably innovative, with gripping drama from all performers. Mercadante is the nearly man of Italian opera, with a successful career lasting from 1819 to the 1860s yet never quite achieving the level of prominence, or historical endurance, of his contemporaries. Opera Rara has already espoused three of his operas over the years and last night (28 June 2022) the company presented Mercadante's Il proscritto at the Barbican Hall, following recording sessions. Carlo Rizzi conducted the Britten Sinfonia and Opera Rara Chorus, with Irene Roberts, Ramón Vargas, Iván Ayón-Rivas, Elizabeth DeShong, Sally Matthews, and Goderdzi […]

Choir of Puebla Cathedral (Photo by Gusvel / Wikipedia CC BY-SA 4.0) Christmas in Puebla; Siglo de Oro, Patrick Allies; Wigmore Hall Reviewed by Robert Hugill on 31 December 2021 Star rating: 5.0 (★★★★★) Bursting with life, the music from 17th century Puebla in Mexico shows how the sacred and secular intertwine in this engagingly delightful programmeThe New Year's Eve gala concert at Wigmore Hall on 31 December 2021 formed a delightful conclusion to this year's concert going. Christmas in Puebla featured Siglo de Oro, artistic director Patrick Allies in music associated with Puebla Cathedral in Mexico, a pilgrimage church in what was then New Spain. The programme centred on Juan Gutierrez de Padilla, his Missa Joseph fili David alongside lighter, more secular-influence works by Padilla and his contemporaries. Allies directed an ensemble that consisted of nine singers and a varied instrumental ensemble of two guitars, baroque harp, […]
