From Early Music to contemporary: the Royal Festival Hall organ is 70 and organist James McVinnie is celebrating with a Southbank Centre residency
[…] wrote to Philip Glass to ask if he could put together a performance for Glass's 80th birthday. The result was a performance by a group of musicians assembled by James at the Barbican on 1 May 2017. It was a unique opportunity and the genesis of his ensemble. He did not do anything further with the ensemble until after the pandemic when he launched it more seriously, performing music by Glass, Adams and percussionist Chris Thompson at the Barbican. They concentrate on music that is less well-known in the UK. The ensemble features two organists and two pianists, all devotees of music by Glass, Adams and other similar composers, and their programmes mix music for all four with two piano repertoire and solos. The June concert will feature ensemble pieces as well music for two players including early Philip Glass pieces as well as Adams' China Gates and Hallelujah Junction. […]

The Coliseum, LondonThere’s never a dull moment in Simon McBurney’s ingenious production, with Sarah Tynan and the ENO orchestra in fine fettle and a demented dalek-like Queen of the NightFor all Mozart’s musical genius, The Magic Flute can be a long and not especially funny night at the opera. A dozen actors, their movement beautifully choreographed, bustle around without ever pulling focus; singers inhabit the auditorium without it feeling gratuitous. There’s aerial wizardry, tiny shadow puppets, some inventive and immaculately coordinated live video (Ben Thompson) and equally ingenious deployment of an onstage […]

Keisha Thompson (Photo: Elmi Ali)Manchester-based writer, performer, producer and maths educator Keisha Thompson has been announced as the fifth winner of the annual DARE Art Prize. DARE is a partnership between the University of Leeds and Opera North, and in association with the National Science and Media Museum and The Tetley, Leeds, and the prize challenges artists and scientists to collaborate on new approaches to the creative process.Keisha Thompson’s project DeCipher takes a playful look at mathematics, aiming to place the subject at the heart of everyday life – literally ‘deciphering’ what many people perceive to be a difficult topic to underline its relevance and make it more accessible to everyone. Recognising that knowledge around mathematical topics, such as coding and economics, gives individuals an advantage in society, Keisha is looking to create an interactive performance piece which delves into the power dynamics attached to mathematics as content, history, pedagogy, and […]
