The Central Band of the Royal Air Force to premiere new work by Thomas Hewitt Jones at concerts in aid of the Royal Air Force Music Services Association
[…] to RAF Music Services.Thomas Hewitt Jones' Wings of Freedom is a four-movement work that is inspired by the core values of the Royal Air Force with movements entitled 'Respect', 'Integrity', 'Service', and 'Excellence'. Alongside the new commission from Thomas Hewitt Jones, the London concert opens with In Our Service, composed by Hewitt Jones in honour of HM Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. Both concert programmes include music by Kevin Day, John Williams, Jan Van der Roost and Alex Shapiro, whilst the Cambridge concert also features music by Steven Reineke.The video shows the Central Band of the Royal Air Force performing Lights on in Space by Andrew Pearce, which was commissioned by Royal Air Force Music Services and dedicated to UK Space Command.Full details from the RAF website.

ClarinetFest 2014 started to wrap up on Sunday afternoon with a marvelous performance by the Festival Choir, consisting of many eager performers who were registered for the conference. Students, professionals, and aficionados alike all took the stage to form one of the largest clarinet choirs seen at the conference this year. Conductors Mitchell Estrin and Raphael Sanders were warm and friendly with both the audience and the choir, and the variety of music performed was sure to leave everybody with a new favorite piece. The choir opened with a commission, Paul Basler’s Dr. Boda’s Magical Spinning Machine. Professor Estrin mentioned that the work was specifically composed for this year’s Festival Choir. The work’s tonal language was dense and constantly swarming, making interesting use of all different sections of the choir. Classical music: Choral music, wind music and brass music add to the season-ending events this super-busy weekend.

On Saturday, May 3, at 7 p.m. in the St. Joseph Chapel at 1000 Edgewood College Drive, the Edgewood Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble will perform under the direction of Walter Rich and Daniel Wallach. Included will be works by Paul Dukas, Jenkins, Williams, Van der Roost and Franz von Suppe. Admission is $7 to benefit music scholarships at the college. On Saturday night at 7:30 p.m., the FESTIVAL CHOIR OF MADISON (below) will conclude its 40th season in the First Baptist Church, 518 North Franklin Avenue, in Madison.
