“No Choice but Love: Songs of the LGBTQ+ Community”
A two-CD song recital that I set aside last year because it didn’t have program notes or the sung texts just surfaced in my pile. This time I noticed a QR code that gets me the program notes on my cellphone, and I finally figured out that they’re also on the record company’s website. I read them—they’re by the much-published writer on music Roger Pines—and was immediately intrigued. Eric Ferring, a marvelous young tenor who has been doing lyric and coloratura roles at the Met recently (e.g., Don Ottavio in Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Pong in Puccini’s Turandot) made his debut recording in this album with pianist Madeline Slettedahl. Perthyn is the second Future Directions Digital Opera from Music Theatre Wales created during 2023, in partnership with Hijinx Theatre. Future Directions is a young people's programme that explores how opera can become a powerfully expressive form for people of all backgrounds and identities. Working in collaboration with professional artists, the young, neurodiverse group of people devise and make a new opera, exploring their ideas and learning from and inspiring each other and the supporting artists.For this project, Music Theatre Wales brought together theatre maker and dramaturg Jain Boon, music maker Mari Mathias, singer Llio Evans and film maker Gavin Porter to work together with the young participants to create a new and original work in three movements. Superstar pianist Hiromi brings her collaborators to the EFG London Jazz FestivalOn 13 November 2023, Japanese superstar pianist Hiromi brought two different ensembles to the EFG London Jazz Festival at the Barbican. The first half featured Hiromi:The Piano Quartet with Hiromi, Thomas Gould, Shlomy Dobrinsky (violins), Meghan Cassidy (viola) and Gabriella Swallow (cello), then the second half featured Hiromi's Sonicwonder with Hiromi, Adam O'Farrill (trumpet), Hadrian Feraud (bass) and Gene Coye (drums). The main item in the first half was Hiromi's extensive and substantial Silver Lining Suite - a lockdown project that has now toured worldwide and is only now having its London debut.
