[…] world's greatest organs 6. Andante sostenuto from Symphonie Gothique (No. 9) Finally, it’s to the Symphonie Gothique that we turn for a gorgeous slow movement – the Andante sostenuto. Gabriel Fauré could have written this, scored perhaps for piano and flute. It’s a wonderfully lilting, cantabile movement and, tantalisingly, its gorgeous hook near the start is never quite repeated. So – enjoy it while you can! Here’s Baptiste-Florian Marle-Ouvrard at the organ of St Eustache in Paris. Oliver Condy

Jean Guillou, Legendary Paris Organist And Composer, Has Died At 88
Guillou, the organist for the church of St. Eustache from 1963 to 2015, had an international career and was excellent at improvisation. He was quoted as saying he wanted his instrument “out of churches” and in other areas of contemporary musical life – working with Noh theatre and with mimes, for instance. – Le Monde (France)

Paradise, and More, at Symphony Hall

Taking the podium before Timbres…, the conductor blew a kiss to the cello section, or might it have been right at Martha Babcock, associate principal leading the dozen. One has to wonder about the first performance of Hector Berlioz’s colossal Te Deum. Some 900 participated at St. Eustache, under the composer’s direction. Sadly, given the heavily populated stage, the Te Deum did not fare well in Symphony Hall, at least not at my seat (Or P8). Hopefully, we will receive positive responses from some of those whose resounding bravos were breaking out a nanosecond after the final notes. Paul Groves’s beautifully spiritualized tenor rang out strongly, he and Berlioz’s setting of Te ergo quaesumus matching up in miraculous style and empathy. You […]
