Very cool piece I found while checking out recordings of another wind band work – T Bone Concerto by Johan de Meij. This piece is by Danish composer Soren Hyldgaard, found on the CD – The Scandinavian Connection by the Danish Concert Band and features several works by both composers. This piece is about the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen. The writer is nowadays mostly known for his fairytales although he wrote many poems, plays and travelogues (if you don’t know what a travelogue is, think Bill Bryson but probably less funny.) The suite is composed of 6 movements: each capturing the essence of a particular part of Andersen’s life whether it’s a story, a journey, a romance; this is the 1st movement called A Noble Poet, introducing the main theme which characterises Andersen himself. This theme crops up throughout the work. The piece is subtitled Adventures for Concert Band and […]

I played this piece a few years ago in my concert band but didn’t think of it until I started this wind band venture. I dug out my old band home made recordings, they didn’t have composer names on the CD so I had to SoundCloud it to find the composer. Totally worth it to discover a ‘whole new world’ of music and this brilliant composer. Anyway this is Johan de Meij’s first work for solo trombone and wind band, written in 1995 and commissioned by the Kentucky Music Educator’s Association The movements are creatively titled Rare, Medium and Well Done to concur with the T-Bone Steak and the fact that each movement is progressively more difficult than the last. This second movement is wonderfully melodic and rich in tone. Written in classic A-B-A form the movement is in 3/4. the first theme is languid and sensuous before the pace is […]
