A major part of Weber’s instrumental music was created for situations in which he himself was required either to organize a concert or to perform in one. Not only did he write piano concertos for his own use but, having surrounded himself with excellent musicians, he also then composed chamber works for various instruments. The most striking music to be created out of these circumstances was composed for the clarinetist Heinrich Bärmann, with whom Weber had often toured. Weber reworked the principal theme of Silvana (1808-1810), his first successful opera, in his Variations for clarinet and piano op. 33 (1811).

Chameleon Clarinets Captivate
Vivian Choi, Gary Gorcyca, and Kelli O’Connor Another of Chameleon Arts Ensemble’s twice-a-season “Up Close” concerts featured recitals of its members in a cabaret setting at the beautiful Goethe Institute. Upon arrival wine is offered; the guests then sit at small tables with handmade chocolate truffles and sugar cookies shaped like chameleons made by the artistic director, Deborah Boldin. Sunday, one felt charmed even before a sound was produced. Chameleon’s clarinetists Kelli O’Connor and Gary Gorcyca, along with pianist Vivian Choi stunningly characterized Boldin’s skillfully assembled program. Although I am a serious fan of the clarinet, all but one of the pieces were new to me. Acting as emcee, Boldin deftly deconstructed each work for just long enough before the players would offer a sampling. Gorcyca on clarinet with O’Connor on a Leblanc basset horn and pianist Choi opened with the three-movement Concert Piece No. 2 in D Minor, […]

Weber: Clarinet Concertos. In early 1811 Carl Maria von Weber met the brilliant clarinetist Heinrich Bärmann . Their friendship produced the Concertino in E flat major and then the concertos in F minor and E flat. Weber’s Clarinet Quintet, a similarly inventive work, was first heard in 1815. Here are the tracks on this recording: Weber: Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in F minor, Op. 73 Clarinet Concertino in E flat major, Op. 26 Clarinet Concerto No. 2 in E flat Major, Op. 74 Clarinet Quintet in B flat major, Op. 34, J182, version for string orchestra. Performed by Sabine Meyer (clarinet), with the Staatskapelle Dresden , Herbert Blomstedt conducting. Sabine Meyer brings her amazing artistry to all four of these creative, engaging and often dazzling pieces of early Romanticism. Here is Sabine Meyer performing the Concerto for clarinet #1 by Weber: […]
