Bruckner: Symphony No. 3 (CD Review)
by Karl NehringFirst version, 1873 (edited by Leopold Nowak). Gürzenich-Orchester Köln; François-Xavier Roth, conductor. Myrios Classics MYR033One of the most fascinating yet frustrating bodies of work left by a major musical figure is the set of symphonies of the Austrian composer Anton Bruckner (1824-1896). There are the nine numbered symphonies (i.e., Symphonies Nos. 1-9), some of which exist in several different versions, having been revised by Bruckner himself and/or various others. In addition, there are two other symphonies, including a D minor Symphony, which he retracted, but which has been published and is referred to today as Symphony No. 0 (‘Die Nullte’) and an F minor symphony, which he rejected, but was finally published in 1973 and is sometimes referred to as Symphony No. 00 (‘Study Symphony’). Particularly complicated has been the story of his Symphony No. 3, as this explanation from the Hyperion website makes clear: “Of all the Bruckner symphonies, No. 3 […]

New Jersey Symphony. Joseph Young, conductor; Sterling Elliott, cello. October 21, 2023.
Count Basie Center, Red Bank, NJ. Orchestra Center (Seat G101, $55).Soloist Elliott acknowledging the orchestra, with conductor Young looking on.ProgramSnapshots by Jessie Montgomery.Cello Concerto in A Minor, Op. 129 by R. Schumann.Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 36, "Enigma" by Elgar. The draw of the concert, for me, is the Schumann Cello concerto. About ten days prior we heard the piano concerto performed by Trifonov. Today's Program Notes isn't as "educational" as the writeup in NY Phil's Playbill, but the music is equally fascinating. Instead of taking years to write the piano concerto, Schumann took all of two weeks to do it for the cello; it was written in 1850, a few years later. It's a lovely concerto. Again I am more familiar with it than I thought. The young soloist is a recent Avery Fisher Prize winner. He is from a musical family, and was brought up with a jazz and […]

Pastorals : Beethoven and Knecht
Two pastorals : Beethoven's Symphony no 6 "Pastoral" op 68 and Justin Heinrich Knecht Le Portrait musical de la Nature , with Bernhard Forck conducting the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, part of the ongoing Harmonia Mundi series where Beethoven's music is presented in thoughtful juxtaposition, geared towards listeners already familiar with the basics of Beethoven. This recording examines Beethoven's Symphony no 6 in the context of pastoral traditions in European music, which evolved from the17th century and adapted to the Early Romantic aesthetic. Justin Knecht (1752-1817), a generation older than Beethoven, was an organist and composer who lived all of his life in Baden-Württemberg region. Knecht described Le Portrait musical de la nature as a "Tongemälde der Natur oder Groẞe Symphonie" (a tone painting in the form of a large symphony). In the first Allegretto, Knecht's written description suggests a scene where the sun shines, zephyrs blow, and brooks […]
