[…] Frederick Wilhelm I of Prussia, she was talented musically but forbidden to study it by her father. She was only able to begin studying openly in 1740 when her brother became King Frederick II of Prussia (Frederick the Great). Anna Amalia never married, she became abbess of the secularised convent of Quedlinburg, a non-religious court position that gave her an income and a place to live in Berlin. She employed one of Bach's pupils, Johann Philipp Kirnberger, as her teacher and accumulated a remarkable collection of manuscript copies of scores. Her collection numbers some 600 pieces with a huge number of Bach manuscripts, including he presentation score for Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, one of the earliest copies of the Mass in B minor and much else besides. […] thing is the tuning. It needs to be a system which allows all the keys to be played, so not a meantone one, but the information about exactly what system Bach used is frustratingly imprecise. His son CPE Bach gives a description of a possible tuning system which makes all keys playable (quoted in Steven Devine's note), but as Devine says 'to the modern eye, this is impossibly vague'. Devine opts for a version of Kirnberger III (first proposed by Johann Philipp Kirnberger in 1779).Why the worry, why not use the same system as the piano? Well, you could be surely we want to keep the sense the some keys, whilst playable, are more pungent than others. Devine's account of the music is similarly well-tempered, he does not go for extremes of tempos and brings poise and clarity to his playing. […] is often considered that it sums up the entire history of Baroque variation, the Diabelli Variations by Beethoven being the Classical counterpart. However, doomed perhaps by its requirements of virtuoso techniques from a performer, it was not as popularly known as the Well-Tempered Clavier, which was not even published during the composer’s lifetime. Nonetheless, the work has long been regarded as the most important set of variations composed in the Baroque era: in 1774 Johann Philipp Kirnberger, one of Bach’s pupils, referred to it as “the best variations”, while in 1802 Johann Nicolaus Forkel, the author of the first ever biography of J. S. Bach, praised the work as the “model, according to which all variations should be made”.
