This year's Beverley & East Riding Early Music Festival is presenting an action-packed weekend of events from 27 to 29 May 2022, in a variety of historic venues in this picturesque Yorkshire town. The festival is opened by Florilegium with celebration of the music of JS Bach mixing Brandenburg Concertos with an orchestral suite and violin concerto. Then to close the festival, I Fagiolini present Draw on sweet night, celebration of the madrigals of John Wilbye, and there will also be a screening to Tony Britten's film Draw on Sweet Night which looks at how John Wilbye spent his working life in the service and home of Suffolk recusants Sir Thomas and Lady Elizabeth Kytson. You performers appearing at the festival include the Spanish Ensemble Sarbacanes with Music for Garden and Table with music from Haydn, Mozart and Salieri, whilst Prisma recreate the atmosphere of the pubs and bars of 17th century London during the […]

Sacred and Profane: The Sixteen's 2018 Choral Pilgrimage
[…] Arrayed, a rather austere piece notwithstanding some rich textures and its use of a religious-themed text rather reminded me of some of Byrd's three-part English pieces. The final Cornysh piece, though still melancholy, was more obviously secular, sung by just three voices, tenors Mark Dobell and Jeremy Budd, and bass Ben Davies. It was gentle, lyrical piece, with a deceptively simple melody. The final work in the programme was Britten's Sacred and Profane. Written for the Wilbye Consort of Voices, a five-voice vocal ensemble conducted by Peter Pears which premiered the work in 1975. I have to confess that I have only ever heard performances from choirs, and it would be interesting to hear a one voice per part performance. The work sits in Britten's final period, alongside the Suite on English Folk Tunes "A Time There Was" (1974), the Third String Quartet (1975), and the dramatic cantata Phaedra (1975). There […]

Classical music: The UW Concert Choir, Choral Union and Symphony Orchestra will perform world premieres, local premieres and new music in three concerts this weekend
[…] information about the events: CONCERT CHOIR The Concert Choir concert explores in music of several centuries the theme of “Art Born of Tragedy” — how outside events can be the spark that causes the creation of works of substance that range from the gentle and comforting to rage and despair. We will sing music from the Renaissance: part of the Thomas Tallis’ “Lamentations of Jeremiah (on the ancient destruction of Jerusalem ),” and a John Wilbye madrigal “Draw on Sweet Night” for a Broken Heart.” We will present three works from modern composers: one is a world premiere by the prize-winning composer Laura Schwendinger (below top), my colleague at the UW-Madison , for viola — played by Sally Chisholm (below bottom) of the UW Pro Arte Quartet — and wordless chorus. It is called “For Paris” in memory of those killed in the Paris terrorist bombings of 2015. (Adds composer […]
