A good season, with a few things I'd like to see. Copy and pasted from press release, a few comments in brackets. The production by Ian Judge returns to Los Angeles for the first time since 2006. [Not after the fab cast we had in 2016 in SF.] Satyagraha (Philip Glass)October 20 through November 11, 2018; company premiereFollowing the extraordinary success of Einstein on the Beach (2013) and Akhnaten (2016), LA Opera completes the Philip Glass operatic trilogy about great thinkers who changed the world. You know why I'm doing this, right? Because these works are again on the schedule, all in the same year. It is a […]

And the run of withdrawals and cancellations continues at the War Memorial Opera House! There are no changes to Jenufa. For Carmen, Nadine Sierra has withdrawn from her scheduled engagement as Micaela. Ellie Dehn replaces her in the opening night cast. In the alternate cast, Maxim Aksenov replaces Riccardo Massi as Don Jose. Massi and Sierra are both withdrawing for personal reasons. Further, resident conductor Jordi Bernacer replaces Carlo Montanaro for the final Carmen performance. For Don Carlo, Krassimimira Stoyanova has withdrawn, owing to ongoing health concerns that prevent her from traveling long distances. (And that is a bummer.) Ana Maria Martinez replaces her as Elisbetta di Valois. And I must admit, Martinez is a very classy replacement. Ferruccio Furlanetto will replace Rene Pape as Filippo II in the very last performance of Don Carlo, owing to a scheduling conflict on Pape's part. As I […]
