Celebrating Lutheran Master’s 339th Birthday
[…] and Grimalkin (2023) by Will Stackpole, the latter written especially for Rothfritz and inspired by the Bach/Hindemith pairing. Until recently, Bach on piano has not typically been a BBB feature, as Boston audiences typically prefer historically-informed performances on harpsichord or clavichord. Nevertheless, the Bach Birthday has featured piano performances in the last three years: in 2021 professor Noam Elkies played a transcription of the first Brandenburg concerto; in 2022 April Sun and Andrus Madsen performed Rheinberger’s transcription of the Goldberg Variations on two authentic 19th-century grand pianos; and last year Artem Belogurov performed Bach on a reconstruction of a Baroque piano. Such historically-informed performance of Bach on piano is becoming more in vogue, and the Bach Birthday is pleased to be a part of the movement towards a broader understanding of historical performance. This year, pianist Calvin Kotrba will continue the perform Bach’s French Suite No. 6 in E Major […]

Dramatic Elgar and rare Chadwick from BBC National Orchestra of Wales & Andrew Constantine on Orchid Classics
[…] different focus. And, as a bonus, you have the complete musical performance without spoken interludes on a second disc. The companion piece on the disc is Tam O'Shanter by the American composer George Whitefield Chadwick. Chadwick was an almost exact contemporary of Elgar's, but though the two did meet once they never seem to have had anything like a positive relationship. Chadwick studied in New England and with Carl Reinecke in Leipzig, and then with Joseph Rheinberger in Munich. Returning to the USA, he became dean of the New England Conservatory. Though Chadwick has a reputation as a teacher, his substantial body of music is relatively unexplored.Tam O'Shanter was written in 1915 and is very much in the European tone-poem mould, full of highly descriptive passages inspired by Burns. The music of Brahms and particularly Dvorak does not seem too far away, though influence of Richard Strauss seems less present here. […]

What composers that aren’t well known do you like and why do you like them?
I’m a singer who does a lot of church work to pay the bills and I’ve gained an appreciation for Rheinberger over time. I’ve only ever met organists or church singers who like him, so it’s not often I get to talk about him. He’s not one of the “greats” but I enjoy his stuff. …
