Serious Songs: Jess Dandy & Martin Roscoe in Schubert, Brahms, Wolf, Strauss at Wigmore Hall
Jess Dandy (Photo Clare Park)Schubert, Brahms, Wolf, Richard Strauss; Jess Dandy, Martin Roscoe; Wigmore HallA fine recital from the young contralto centred on Brahms' Four Serious Songs but stretching from Schubert to Richard StraussAs the Wigmore Hall's 2021/22 season drew to a close, on Friday 29 July 2022 contralto Jess Dandy and pianist Martin Roscoe gave a recital of songs by Schubert, Brahms, Wolf and Richard Strauss, centred on Brahms' Four Serious Songs, Op. 121 and ending with Strauss' songs Op. 27.We began with a selection of Schubert songs. First a group which had water as their theme, from the murmuring brook of Liebesbotschaft (from Schwanengesang) to Die Forelle to Auf der Donau to the stormy tempest in Die junge Nonne. Dandy has quite a distinctively direct, plangent tone quality to her voice, and throughout the recital I was struck by the real sculptural quality to her phrasing. Liebesbotschaft was rather considered, with a lovely even sound and a beautifully rippling […]

Anna Prohaska (soprano)Christian Gerhaher (baritone)Ammiel Bushakevitz (piano) A decidedly superior Liederabend, in terms of verse, musical setting, and performance. Hugo Wolf remains a connoisseur’s composer: slightly perplexing, perhaps, but then there is no playing to the gallery, no folkish dalliance, nothing that might strain toward the evidently popular. This is song born above all in verse and […]

Smoked beer, ETA Hoffmann and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra: Tony explores the picturesque Upper Franconian town of Bamberg
Schlenkerla tavern, Bamberg (Photo Schlenkerla tavern) In between performances at the Bayreuth Festival, Tony Cooper recalls time out exploring the picturesque Upper Franconian town of Bamberg, from historic breweries and smoked beer to ETA Hoffmann, and looks forward to the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra's new season.I’ve heard a lot of good things said about Bamberg - located in Upper Franconia and situated on the Regnitz which flows gently into the river Main - not least by the fame of its breweries. So while I was staying in the vicinity attending the Bayreuth Festival, I thought a day in Bamberg would embrace a nice rail excursion on one of my days off from Wagner. My presumption proved correct. I had a wonderful time. The journey from Bayreuth to Bamberg only takes about an hour and the Old Town (Altstadt) - the area to head for - is within easy walking […]

A touch of heaven: The Divine Muse, Mary Bevan & Joseph Middleton in Wolf, Schubert & Haydn
The Divine Muse - Schubert, Haydn, Wolf; Mary Bevan, Joseph Middleton; Signum Classics Reviewed by Robert Hugill on 22 January 2020 Star rating: 4.0 (★★★★) A fascinating programme in which Mary Bevan and Joseph Middleton look at the sense of the divine in songs by Schubert, Wolf and HaydnThis new disc from soprano Mary Bevan and pianist Joseph Middleton on the Signum Classics label takes us to heaven by way of 19th century Germany and Austria. The Divine Muse features songs by Franz Schubert and Hugo Wolf which use texts inspired by people who were touched by the gods. So we have Ganymede (euphemistically referred to as Zeus' cup-bearer) in settings by Schubert and by Wolf as well as Dido, Venus and more, as well as Jesus and his mother. At the centre of the recital is Joseph Haydn's Arianna a Naxos, a cantata yet written with just […]
