Choir of Puebla Cathedral (Photo by Gusvel / Wikipedia CC BY-SA 4.0) Christmas in Puebla; Siglo de Oro, Patrick Allies; Wigmore Hall Reviewed by Robert Hugill on 31 December 2021 Star rating: 5.0 (★★★★★) Bursting with life, the music from 17th century Puebla in Mexico shows how the sacred and secular intertwine in this engagingly delightful programmeThe New Year's Eve gala concert at Wigmore Hall on 31 December 2021 formed a delightful conclusion to this year's concert going. Christmas in Puebla featured Siglo de Oro, artistic director Patrick Allies in music associated with Puebla Cathedral in Mexico, a pilgrimage church in what was then New Spain. […] compositions. Azéma leads The Boston Camerata Les Fleurs, Trinity Choristers, and Boston City Singers (Tobador photo) A thoughtful pairing of a Latin (but not Roman?) Agnus Dei, cantored by the rich-toned mezzo soprano Deborah Rentz-Moore and the ladies of Les Fleurs des Caraïbes (alternating verses), and Tomás Luis de Victoria’s complex Agnus Dei from his Missa Ave Regina brought us back to Spain. Colonial choral music in the New World is enjoying attention through new publications and a variety of recordings now available: the folk choir Coro Hispano de San Francisco has produced two recordings (including some of the Quecha/Nahautl selections heard above) [here ] the […]

Savall’s BEMF Social Club
[…] virtuosic maraca solo, playing a variety of complex rhythms and textures, a wide range of speeds, even striking the handles of the maracas against each other and setting up the unlikely use of the phrase “virtuosic maraca solo” in a classical music review. The final set of the first half, a Moresca by Pedro Guerrero, a folía variation set by the organ composer Antonio de Cabezón, and the earthy Mexican guaracha of Juan Garcia de Zéspedes featured some particularly deft echo duetting from Savall on vielle and Martínez on violin, and ended with the ensemble singing four part harmony with folksy abandon. Perhaps in a tip to the Boston setting, Savall took the stage to open the second half with a solo performance of three Scottish and New England dances, making traditional Celtic fiddle tunes sound natural and fluid on the bass viol, tuned with 4th and 5th strings tranposed […]
