It’s winter in Italy, but it’s summer in Auckland Town Hall with New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s four-course Tuscan menu . The entrée was Barber of Seville Overture, cooked to perfection by NZSO musicians, followed by Mendelssohn’s violin concerto, not particularly Italian but equally delicious. It’s a shame that American violinist Stefan Jackiw cancelled his trip to NZ in last minute due to illness, but Vesa-Matti Leppänen stepped in to save the day with his stunning performance. We soon returned to Tuscan flavours with Rossini’s Soirées Musicales, seasoned with Britten’s orchestration. NZSO chose a reduced version of the score which seemed to confuse the guest Japanese conductor Junichi Hirokami during rehearsal, who then added back a few ingredients from the original recipe to present the unique version inbetween the reduced and the full editions.
