Salzburg Mozartwoche (6) - Peretyatko/Danish CO/Fischer: Mozart and Salieri, 30 January 2024
Grosser Saal Mozart: Lucio Silla, KV 135: Overture; Don Giovanni, KV 527: ‘Crudele! Ah no, mio bene!’ – ‘Non mi dir, bell’idol mio’ Salieri: Sinfonia, ‘La Veneziana’ Mozart: Concert aria, ‘Ch’io mi scordi di te?’ – ‘Non temer, amato bene’, KV 505; Idomeneo, KV 366: ‘Oh smanie! Oh furie!’ – ‘D’Oreste, d’Alace’; Symphony no.36 in C major, KV 425, ‘Linz’ Olga Peretyatko (soprano)Danish Chamber Orchestra, Ádám Fischer (conductor)Images: Wolfang Lienbacher Ádám Fischer is a fine if sometimes eccentric Mozartian. His concert performance of Il re pastore with the Mozarteum Orchestra at last year’s Salzburg Festival was for me a highlight, and his work wit the Danish Chamber Orchestra has gained many plaudits. Understandably, if this concert, my final engagement at this year’s Mozartwoche, is anything to go by. Moreover, it confirmed the sensational qualities of soprano Olga Peretyatko, whom I had admired in Idomeneo at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden last […]

Every Good Boy Does Fine
[…] in concert or buy his recordings. His teachers are quite a group, and as he approaches graduation from Oberlin, his undergraduate institution, he makes a last-minute decision not to go to USC, where he has been admitted and knows with whom he'd be studying, and to instead go to Indiana University to study with György Sebők, a wizardly Hungarian pianist and teacher. Sebők isn't nearly as well-known as his compatriot, dear friend, and fellow Hungarian, the cellist Janos Starker, but he was clearly the right teacher at the right time for Denk. The book is dedicated to him, and it's clear how much Denk loved and admired him, and why. There are also some mentions of the pianist and teacher Evelyn Brancart, who seems wise in ways different from and complementary to Sebők. These mentions are tantalizing and always made me wish for more.Every Good Boy Does Fine is also a slow, gradual coming-out […]

Ernst von Dohnányi, 2022
[…] continued to compose and conduct, and died in New York in February of 1960 while making a recording of Beethoven’s piano sonatas. As composer, Dohnányi was rather conservative, following the Romantic traditions of the 19th century. Still, his chamber music is of very high quality. Here for example, is his Serenade in C Major for String Trio, Op. 10, from 1902. It’s performed by the Spectrum Concerts Berlin. And here’s is his Konzertstück op.12. János Starker is the soloist, with the Philharmonia Orchestra led by Walter Süsskind in this 1956 recording. As conductor Dohnányi was famous for his interpretation of the music of Béla Bartók, which shows how open-minded Dohnányi was, as the music of his friend was different from his own in every possible way.
