A programme of Bach's concertos and cello suite from Il Gusto Barocco gives us a distant echo of Bach's concerts at Cafe Zimmerman
Bach Suite & Concertos; Il Gusto Barocco, Jörg Halubek; Berlin Classics Reviewed by Robert Hugill on 29 March 2022 Star rating: 4.0 (★★★★) Vividly engaged playing in a programme which attempts to take us to Bach's Cafe ZimmermanHaving released a recording of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos last year [see my review], Jörg Halubek and Il Gusto Barocco continue their Bach journey on Berlin Classics with a disc that combines the Cello Suite No. 3 with the Violin Concerto in A minor, Harpsichord Concerto in D major, Concerto for Two Harpsichords and Concerto for two Violins, with soloists Leila Schayegh (violin), Jörg Halubek (harpsichord), Alexander Gergelyfi (harpsichord), and Anais Chen (violin), plus cellist Jonathan Pesek. The programme is constructed in an intriguing manner, the movements of the Cello Suite are spread throughout the disc punctuating and linking the programme. The ethos behind this programming is a desire to evoke […]

Scholarship and enjoyment combine in Il Gusto Barocco's lovely fresh account of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos
Bach Brandenburg Concertos; Il Gusto Barocco, Jörg Halubek; Berlin Classics Reviewed by Robert Hugill on 31 March 2021 Star rating: 4.0 (★★★★) A new recording from German period instrument ensemble Il Gusto Barocco combines scholarship with sheer enjoymentBach's Brandenburg Concertos is such a wild and wacky set of pieces that it is no wonder that every set of performers has their own view of them. Reinhard Goebbel recently gave a pair of fascinating talks for Kirill Gerstein Invites which introduced us to the complexities of trying to interpret the music based on Bach's manuscript, which is not the work of a professional copyist but of Bach himself. There is thus, probably no definitive account of the music possible on disc, each set of performers will create their own solutions to the work's problems. The set of concertos is an assemblage of largely pre-existing works which Bach would have performed with […]

A Life On-Line: Janacek in London, Ravel in virtual reality, the London Handel in Italy and Germany, Weill in Paris
[…] more about the history of this version, but this terrific performance is a good place to start. [Opera Streaming] Handel: Aci, Galatea e Polifemo - Raffaele Pe - La Lira di Orfeo There was more rare Handel in Il Gusto Barocco's on-line performance of Cleofida, Telemann's version of Handel's Poro adapted to the taste of the theatre in Hamburg, with German dialogue (newly composed by Telemann) and Italian arias. On-line, Jorg Halubek conducted Il Gusto Barocco in a concert of excerpts with Suzanne Jerosme as Cleofida, Florian Gotz as Poro, Jorge Navarro Colorado as Alexander, Johanna Pommranz, Leandro Marziotte, and Josep-Ramon Olivé, with the excerpts making sure that each got an aria. A fine cast and a fascinating piece, I look forward to being able to experience it live at some point. The performance was available for a limited time on the ensemble's website. There is […]
