Jacopo Peri, part II, 2023
[…] the Camerata were composers Giulio Caccini, Vincenzo Galilei, the father of Galileo Galilei, and Pietro Strozzi, but the society included many Florentine intellectuals and composers. Jacopo Peri was one of the first to put these ideas into practice, creating Dafne and Euridice, the first two operas in history. The librettos to the operas were written by another member of the Camerata, the poet Ottavia Rinuccini. Euridice was performed in October of 1600 in the Palazzo Pitti during the celebrations of the wedding of Maria de’ Medici and Henry IV, King of France. Peri’s rivals, composers Caccini and Cavalieri, also took part in the production: the jealous Caccini rewrote the parts sung by his musicians, and Cavalieri staged the opera’s production (that was not enough for Cavalieri: he expected to be put in charge of all the festivities, which didn’t happen; disappointed, he left Florence for good. We recently mentioned this […]

[…] to bring everyone in the hall into unanimity with the ideas expressed by the piece. As they developed through time, court ballets began to introduce comedy, went through a phase where they poked fun at manners and affectations of the time, and they moved into a phase where they became enamoured with pantomime. A 1592 engraving by Orazio Scarabelli depicting the mock sea battle, or naumachia, at the Palazzo Pitti At the time of the court ballet’s birth, a similar art form appeared in Italy called opera, arising out of the Italian court’s love of spectacle; the difference between the two crafts, is that the developing phenomenon in Italy focused on the singing aspect of performance, whereas in France, movement was front and centre. […] Howard, Shore and Tomlinson on stage together in Act II is something special, the younger cast members are equally outstanding. Elgan Llŷr Thomas has a beautifully refined tenor as Nanki-Poo, while Soraya Mafi throws herself completely into the role of Yum-Yum and reveals a radiant sound as she sings ‘The sun whose rays are all ablaze’. Jonathan McGovern is good value as Pish-Tush, Sioned Gwen Davies reveals some very pleasing hues to her mezzo-soprano as Pitti-Sing while Kitty Whately is luxury casting as Peep-Bo. In the pit, Chris Hopkins elicits a beautifully sumptuous and balanced sound from the orchestra, with the consequence that, even at over thirty years of age, Jonathan Miller’s The Mikado can still make for a joyous and uplifting evening when executed as well as it is here.
