Review of Opera North's Parsifal at the Bridgewater Hall
[…] The principals, as I’ve said in another place, are about as near to a dream line-up as you could get, and every one of them was on form for this performance. Brindley Sherratt sustained his rich tone throughout the marathon but also managed to grow older for the final act by stance and demeanour alone; Derek Welton made Klingsor a really vicious-looking but wonderful-sounding baddie; Robert Hayward was noble and affecting as Amfortas, and Katarina Karnéus conveyed remarkable depths of psychology while singing superbly. Both she and Toby Spence (who filled the space with some ringing top notes) seem to have abandoned the beatific grins of the Leeds first night and found a subtler way of portraying blessedness: that’s good.

Man, Woman, Child: new Jonathan Dove song cycle premieres at Wigmore Hall to celebrate Samling's 25th birthday
Jonathan Dove (Photo Marshall Light Studio) The Samling Institute is 25 and to celebrate six alumni of the Samling Artists Programme will be performing at the Wigmore Hall on 7 November 2021, with a programme which includes the premiere of Jonathan Dove's song-cycle Man, Woman, Child. Commissioned to celebrate Samling's 25th birthday, Man, Woman, Child is a setting of poems by the Australian poet Judith Wright (1915-2000). It will be premiered by soprano Alexandra Lowe, tenor Filipe Manu and pianist James Baillieu. And they will joined in the concert by mezzo-soprano Kitty Whately, bass William Thomas and pianist Ian Tindale, for a programme of 20th century English song. Samling began in a barn in Cumbria 25 years ago and since then the Samling Institute has grown to become a global family of singers, pianists and leaders. That first concert was given by Katarina Karnéus, who had just won Cardiff Singer of the World, […]

Opera North launches its 2021/22 season and looks forward to the completion of the new Howard Opera Centre
[…] Covent Garden in 2019, see my review] as Ruggiero and this will be Opera North's first environmentally sustainable production. There is also a double-bill of works by Bernstein which sees a revival of Trouble in Tahiti paired with a new production of West Side Story Symphonic Dances in collaboration with Phoenix Dance Theatre.Next year's concert staging is Wagner's Parsifal which opens at Leeds Grand Theatre before touring to concert halls. Richard Farnes conducts with Katarina Karnéus as Kundry, Brindley Sherratt as Gurnemanz and Toby Spence as Parsifal, the latter two both role debuts and both interesting singers who have been making the journey towards more dramatic roles in recent years [Spence sang Florestan in Opera North's 2020 performance of Fidelio, whilst I chatted to Brindley Sherratt about his Wagner plans in March 2020, see my intervew]. Not to be missed. Exterior of redevelopment work on New Briggate below […]
