[…] has to bring together people who have nothing but music in common. Many of them expressed a sense of wonder and awe that people with so little could emanate such joy. They had, in the words of El Sistema founder, José Antonio Abreu, an “affluence of the spirit.” It inspired the BPYO members to dig deep into their hearts to find that joy for themselves. Zander strongly urges everyone to read the massive document detailing the meaningful tour HERE. Lauren Radnofsky, who 25 years ago belonged to his youth orchestra, remains a devoted collaborator in this document and in general. The post appeared first on The Boston Musical Intelligencer.

BLO Updates Werther
[…] his mental and emotional isolation. Dedham-native and Metropolitan Opera regular Sandra Piques Eddy presented us with two Charlottes: a youthful, somewhat vulnerable maiden, duty-bound to fulfill her mother’s dying wishes, and a vibrant, intense woman who comes into her own and steals most of her scenes from the men. Overwrought from reading Werther’s endless love letters, she poured out her sorrows to her sister Sophie, with the help of an emotional saxophone solo by Kenneth Radnofsky. The second half shifted to music written in Boston at the turn of last century, starting with Loeffler’s Ballade Carnavalesque (1903), scored for flute (Marco Granados-faculty), oboe (Miri Kudo, Artist Diploma ‘12), saxophone (Ken Radnofsky-faculty), bassoon (Adrian Morejon-faculty), and piano (Libor Dudas-faculty). I found the structure of the piece confusing—its sharp shifts in mood and texture seemed capricious, its abrupt ending jarring and unsatisfying. The song cycle that followed (Quatre Poèmes, Op 5, 1905), ably performed by faculty member Karyl Ryczek (soprano), Masume Per Rostad (viola), and the Longy’s Dean, Wayman Chin (piano), felt far more substantial and well-constructed. Ryczek’s dark voice provided a welcome timbre for these songs […]
